For well over a year, BCTA management met with riders, community leaders, employers, human service agencies, and other stakeholders to determine the agency's future vision. Through these conversations, Midland became an extremely high priority. According to the most recent Census data, 2,661 residents remain isolated form any urban center. Lack of access to a grocery store, doctors' offices, or banks creates difficulty in the daily lives of the residents. Though BCTA Shared offers transportation 3 days per week, options for Midland residents remain limited. We created a plan to connect residents to jobs, basic goods and services, medical care, and more.
After a lenthy planning process, BCTA determined the most appropriate service for the community is Same-Day, On-Demand service, often reffered to as Microtransit. This service is rapidly gaining momentum in the public transit industry as it offers more customized and convenient transportation, similar to the models of Uber and Lyft.
BCTA Connect riders will be able to schedule same-day trips on the mobile app or by calling BCTA Customer Service directly.
To make trips faster, BCTA Connect will pick up riders from the curb in front of their residence and drop off closest to their destination.
Each BCTA Connect vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair lift and high roof to improve the accessibility of the service.
The BCTA Connect Destination Zone will be a concetrate area along Route 170 in Calcutta, Ohio. This location provides access to employments, medical facilities, grocery stores, fast food, restaurants, recreation, and educational opportunities.
While the exact fare is still being determined by BCTA, riders should expect to pay in the range of $2.00 - $3.00 each way with discounts for children.
Service will be available Monday - Friday during the hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. If successful, service could expand to 12 hours a day from 6:30 am - 6:30 pm, affording even more transit opportunities.
BCTA has been working with the Columbia Area Rural Transit System (CARTS) whereby Midland microtransit riders can utilize the CARTS shuttle bus to gain additional access to medical and other destinations in East Liverpool for a $1.00 fare.
